Philbert Honanie
Philbert Honanie is Coyote Clan from the Hopi village of Hotevilla on Third mesa. He is one of the first carvers to revive the old style, or traditional, method of kachina doll (katsina doll) carving. He paints them using only natural pigments he collects and processes from around his village, and carves them from cottonwood root he gathers from the San Juan River in southern Utah. He creates kachina dolls to help people understand and appreciate the Hopi culture. He uses only a pocket knife to carve with, and he keeps his dolls simple to help people connect with the designs and motifs used in kachina doll carving.
