Katsinas or Kachinas are benevolent spirit beings of the Hopi and other Pueblo peoples of Arizona and New Mexico. They represent everything in life and nature from the rainclouds that bring us much needed moisture to the stars in the sky. They reside on the San Francisco peaks for much of the year and appear in the Hopi villages from December to July in order to bring hope and goodwill for all. They are represented as carved Tihus or dolls and are given to young girls and women to reward and teach. All traditional dolls are painted with homemade plant and mineral pigments and are decorated with a variety of materials and utilize real bird feathers such as the Pheasent, parrot, macaw, duck and other s. All dolls are carved from Cottonwood tree roots and come directly from Hopi carvers that we have worked with for years. Every doll is unique and special and we are able to special order if you so desire or if we do not have the particular doll you want in stock.
